Abstract

This chapter explores the work of a library adult literacy programme working closely with other education providers in Risdon Prison in Australia. The Literacy Service operates as a form of outreach to the prison population who have low literacy levels and are not yet engaged in education or using the prison library. In this context, it is a form of radical inclusion, creating opportunities for those most disadvantaged to access learning. The library services help to create a literate environment for prisoners and provide opportunities for prisoners to increase their engagement in lifelong learning and everyday literacy practices, giving them a better chance of developing their literacy skills. Strategies explored for engaging this cohort include a range of creative projects, small group work and one to one tutoring. The Literacy Service has developed best practice approaches to deliver effective literacy support using strategies and approaches that align with research and these are adapted for work in the prison context. The Literacy Service approach is aligned with the wider prison goals of rehabilitation and reintegration and the chapter explores a theory of change to identify how prison education may be most effective in supporting rehabilitation (Szifris, Fox, & Bradbury, 2018). The library Literacy Service offers safe spaces, opportunities to create social bonds, reshape identity, engage in informal learning and set new goals – key elements found to be critical in rehabilitation. The Prison Library Impact Framework, developed by Finlay and Bates (2018), connects these elements with the theory of change model to propose a tool that may be useful to evaluate prison library services in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the application of intelligent agents (IAs) in organizational memory systems within the larger schema of knowledge management (KM) strategies. This includes targeted roles of IAs in relation to institutional memory approaches.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual exploration of related sections of the Grundspenkis seven-layer intelligent enterprise memory framework that serves to identify, retain, deliver and reuse information for future utilization is conducted. Applications of IAs in multiple industries are presented to illustrate the conceptual model in practice.

Findings

This paper identifies arising roles that IAs perform in information search, retrieval and analysis in the organizational memory formation process and extensions that have emerged in a non-linear bi-directional form. These layered roles include obtaining and reapplying important information as part of extended human–machine cognition.

Research limitations/implications

While exploratory and conceptual in nature, this research paper discusses IAs as possible components in the advancement of organization memory.

Practical implications

By analyzing the application of IAs in different industries, across select layers of a KM structure, groundwork is laid for both descriptive research (i.e. where and how artificial intelligence is being used in those industries) and prescriptive practice (i.e. how other industries can benefit from such assistance and what patterns of implementation to expect).

Originality/value

This study explores the role IAs play in helping knowledge workers gather, retain and find relevant information and how KM strategies may assist organizational memory.

Abstract

Purpose

The increasing diversity among workforces – as well as the increasing diversity among patient populations served – offers a variety of opportunities and potential pitfalls for healthcare organizations and leaders. To unravel this complexity, the authors aim to holistically understand how to maximize provider and patient experiences regardless of (1) the degree to which diversity is present or lacking, and (2) the type(s) of diversity under consideration.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper develops a framework that combines three organizational behavior theories – emotional labor theory, similarity-attraction theory and climate theory – with evidence from the broader healthcare literature.

Findings

Authentic interactions yield positive outcomes for providers (i.e. improved job attitudes and work-related well-being) and patients (i.e. patient satisfaction) and acts as a mediator between demographic diversity and positive outcomes. Demographic similarity facilitates authentic interactions, whereas demographic diversity creates an initial barrier to engaging authentically with others. However, the presence of a positive diversity climate eliminates this barrier.

Originality/value

The authors offer a conceptual model to unlock positive outcomes – including reduced absenteeism, better morale and improved patient satisfaction – regardless of the level and types of diversity present within the workforce. In addition to deriving an agenda for future research, the authors offer practical applications regarding how diversity can be more effectively managed and promoted within healthcare organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

While the popularity of online shopping has increased in recent years, surprisingly little research has examined the factors affecting consumers’ behavior in this context. Furthermore, though a widespread problem for companies, the phenomenon of online shopping cart abandonment has garnered even less attention. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of consumers’ mindsets in online shopping cart abandonment.

Design/methodology/approach

Three experimental studies were conducted to examine the effect of consumer mindsets (i.e. abstract vs concrete) on purchase intentions.

Findings

Results indicate that consumers who have an abstract (as opposed to concrete) mindset when shopping online rate the products they include in their shopping carts to be more important, and consequently are more likely to purchase them, reducing shopping cart abandonment.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that online retailers can reduce shopping cart abandonment by implementing strategies that allow consumers to think abstractly.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature by identifying an important underlying mechanism affecting online shopping cart abandonment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate international students’ cultural adjustment, academic satisfaction and turnover intentions using ecological systems perspective and explores factors that affect academic success and turnover by exploring three stages: arrival, adjustment and adaptation.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample consists of 208 international students enrolled at a mid-Western university in the USA. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling and mediational analyses were used to test hypotheses.

Findings

Findings indicate that self-efficacy, as a pre-sojourn characteristic, affects adjustment variables inclusive of cultural adjustment, affecting academic satisfaction and turnover intentions. Adjustment variables (coping, cultural adjustment and organizational support) mediated relationships between self-efficacy and turnover intentions.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed model moves the research forward by examining an ecological systems framework describing how individual, social, academic, cultural and institutional factors function in supporting international students’ transitions. Results may be generalizable to other large US universities with varying dynamics and resources available (or not) for international students.

Originality/value

Given the challenges international students face in the USA in adapting to both new culture and academic setting, it is imperative to identify what elements of their transition and academic environment predict academic success. This is one of the first studies testing the propositions derived from Schartner and Young’s (2016) model.

Considers some differences between Anglo‐American and European modes of production and methods of professionalism. Looks at theoretical models of professions and states, taking into account Herbert Spencer’s work, as well as that of Weber, Durkheim and Foucault. Examines the implications a common European Union (EU) regime will have on professional services – focusing on formal mechanisms (such as international associations) and informal mechanisms (such as lobbying and networking). Raises some questions on how internationalization is reworking and redefining professions, with new processes and mechanisms developing at both national and international level. Promotes the urgency of developing sociological models of profession‐state relations at both levels.
